Junior Science Years 7 to 10
Assessment Policy
Our assessment policy for Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 and 5 from the NSW Science Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum) comprises a range of assessment tasks designed to assess the four broad areas suggested by the BOSTES syllabus documents i.e.
- knowledge
- practical skills
- processing and analysing data
- communication skills
Broadly speaking, students in each year group will be required to complete a Term Test towards the end of each term i.e. in either the second last, or last, week of term. This assessment task will contain a section where students will be asked to recall their knowledge of the content of the unit studied during that term, as well as a section on processing and analysing data, and possibly, but not always, a section on communicating scientific information. Students will also be asked to complete practical assessment tasks, either at school or, in Years 8 (Stage 4) and 10 (Stage 5), at home by way of a Student Research Project (SRP) as mandated by the BOSTES. In addition, our Year 7 students will create a video presentation early in Term Two (during the unit To Zoo or not to Zoo).
Students will be given adequate notice (in class) for any assessment task that they are required to complete. As a general rule students will be informed at least two weeks in advance of the task date. Quite often the task date will vary from class to class, with individual teachers discussing the optimum timing of the task with their students i.e. we try to allow for the students' workloads at any given time. Students (and parents) can check to see if a task is imminent in any of the following ways:
- check the Where Are We Up To? page on this website (Faculties/Science/Junior Science)
- check the calendar on the Home page on this website (homepage)
- register for the Skoolbag app to receive text message reminders
- look for reminders on Edmodo (for those students whose teachers use this application
