Homework Policy

The Science department at Kotara High School actively encourages students to complete homework on a regular basis.

All teachers allocate homework assignments, usually on a fortnightly basis.  For an average unit four homework assignments would be distributed.

Some teachers provide all homework assignments for a given unit in a single booklet.

In either case all students are expected to complete all homework assignments and submit them on or before the due date.

Parents are encouraged to sign their childrens' homework assignments in the space allocated.  We believe that this encourages students to make a greater effort.

Parents are notified by letter if a student misses two or more homework sheets.

To access copies of homework assignments for a given unit please use the links below.

Homework assignments (hard copies) are given to students during class time. Students who misplace their hard copy(ies) can access them here (see below) or via Edmodo if their teacher is making use this valuable educational application.

We encourage students to complete homework assignments on a regular basis. Our teaching programs for Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 and 5 of the NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum) contain one teaching unit per term. During the unit, students will be asked to complete 4 fortnightly homework assignments. These will be due (approximately – dates will vary from class to class and will also depend on other factors i.e. carnivals, school camps, etc.) at the end of weeks 3, 5, 7 and 9 of each term.

Please note that during Term One, Year 10 will be given their instruction sheet for their Student Research Project (SRP). They will be required to complete this task over the second half of Term One and early in Term Two. This will mean that there will only be two homework assignments in Term One.

Each homework assignment is designed to contain tasks which reflect our assessment policy for Years 7 to 10 i.e. the assignment contains questions on each of our four assessment areas: recall of knowledge; practical skills; processing and analysing data; communicating scientifically. Students who make the effort to complete and submit their homework assignments tend to improve their grades in these areas, thus improving their overall achievement grade for Science. Parents will be informed by letter if their child is not completing the designated homework assignments.
